John Key and Rodney Hide – hand in hand down the isle.

One week to e-day – The two faces of John Key have been joined by the two faces of Rodney Hide – but will the four smiling faces be enough to out vote Key’s dreaded five headed monster that must now be accepted as the most predictable outcome on election day.

One News – Saturday, 1 November 2008, 6:55 pm – Key and Hide pledge support – One of the worst kept secrets in politics went public on Saturday afternoon.

National leader John Key and Act leader Rodney Hide met in the Auckland suburb of Remuera, pledging their support for one another.

Key says he looks forward to having Hide as a minister if he forms the next government, but maintains he has ruled out a ministerial job for Sir Roger Douglas.

Hide accepts Key’s decision but says if Act polls well, he may revisit the issue during negotiations.

The One News video clip goes further – The National leader says he looks forward to having Mr Hide as a Minister if he forms the next government – but it made it clear Roger Douglas is not welcome.

No doubt there will be more to this announcement tomorrow.

John Key in the hot seat – his past revisited.

Eugene Bingham – Herald – Wednesday 29 October 2008 – John Key faces accusations of misleading the public about his knowledge of one of New Zealand’s most notorious white collar crimes.

The allegations center around the two payments totalling A$66.5 million to Equiticorp funnelled via sham foreign exchange transactions in 1988 – the so-called H-Fee scam.  At an interview in August last year, Mr Key gave the confirmed to the Herald that he worked as a foreign exchange dealer at Elders Merchant Finance, part of Elders IXL which made the payments to the Allan Hawkins-controlled Equiticorp. But he [Key] maintains he had left Elders in 1987, before the transactions were processed. … I was never involved in them.

“I guess I’m telling you because I’d rather be on the front foot. I don’t really care. There’s absolutely nothing I’ve got to hide. Everything is totally correct and honest and transparent.” Key said.

The Herald have raised questions about several aspects of the version Key told, including his memory of when he left the company. He resigned from Elders in June 1988, six months after the first payment.  to Melbourne last week to search documents relating to a court case over the H-Fee.

The 13,000 page court file, which the Herald searched in Melbourne this week, contains a statement Mr Key made to an investigator with the Australian National Crime Authority in May 1991.  For more … click here.

In a ‘Best of political analysis’ article – Herald, Sunday 26 October, 2008

It is looking increasingly likely that the Maori Party will hold the balance of power after the election.

A state of affairs rich in irony and verging on poetic justice. Labour, whose Foreshore and Seabed Act was the catalyst for the creation of the Maori Party may find itself in coalition talks with the very people Helen Clark described as haters and wreckers when they led a hikoi to Parliament protesting against the law.

Meanwhile National, which had pledged to abolish the Maori seats, now finds that, to get its hands on the levers of power, it may be depending on the support of MPs it has vowed to constitutionally exterminate. Little wonder that John Key, looking slightly nauseous, now takes the position that the abolition of the seats is “not a bottom line”.

John Key has an important secret about his leadership.  The infamous Crosby/Textor Australian political strategists employed to manage Key’s public image and political strategy.

Nicky Hager revealed all in the Sunday Star-Times, Monday, 30 June 2008 – Each step of Key’s election08 campaign to become New Zealand’s PM has been overseen and directed by the same professional manipulators used (and also kept secret) by Key’s predecessor Don Brash.  The Crosby/Textor role, advising Key, is known to National party staffers, including some who are uneasy about Crosby/Textor’s involvement in the ‘dirty tricks’ kept secret from the public. That there is a whistle blower – is not surprising.

Winston Peters and NZ First vindicated …

In an embarrassing slap in the face for Act leader Rodney Hide, the Electoral Commission has found his party [the Act party] guilty of not declaring a $20,000-a-year office space it received as a donation.

The undeclared office space, provided by Sir Robert Jones, was one of three allegations made against Act by Winston Peters after Mr Hide reported him and his NZ First party to the police and Serious Fraud Office over donations.

The tables were turned on Mr Hide yesterday when the commission upheld the complaint, initiated by Labour MP David Benson-Pope, and ordered Act to file an amended return to include the premises it had used until 2005. For more, including comments on this post – click here.

The Peterson Institute for International Economics – Last year, deemed the New Zealand Superannuation Fund the very model of a modern sovereign wealth fund. The non-partisan, Washington-based think tank placed it at the top of 32 such funds, ahead of the likes of oil-rich Norway and the Emirates, because it ticked almost all of 25 criteria boxes. Not the least of these was being able to make investment decisions free of government interference.

John Key, with his futures trading minds-eye is already poised to follow National’s past Muldoonist policy to get his hand on your super fund.

Todays Herald Editorial, Hands Off the Super Fund provides an overview of the National policy. Highlighting, National’s suggestion that investment opportunities here could encompass long-term infrastructure bonds. Projects to be embraced might include public-private roading partnerships and the roll-out of high-speed internet. On no account, however, must the fund be used for initiatives that do not garner a rate of return which stacks up internationally. If such were the case, the fund would, indeed, have become the finance minister’s plaything.

The Herald Editorial ending on a cautionary note – Global financial upheaval has spurred a wide array of government interventions. Nonetheless, it remains odd to see a party that champions market freedom proposing such ill-considered meddling. The Superannuation Fund’s investment strengths are its liquidity and diversification. National’s proposal would diminish that considerably, and encourage further political interference. The fund should be left to pursue its original superannuation goals as best it can. … For more, including comments relevant to this post.
